British Values

At Skylarks we actively promote British Values and ensure the children leave Skylarks prepared for their next learning journey at school.

The children are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and to understand that while different people may hold different views about what is 'right' and 'wrong', all people living in England are subject to its law.

Democracy

What is Democracy?

A culture built upon freedom and equality, where everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities.

How we promote this:

  • We listen to all child and parent voices.

  • Parents fill in questionnaire to enable us to provide the best learning environment for their children.

  • Our behaviour policy is clear that children are expected to contribute and co-operate

  • We give children the chance to vote for choices of activities.

  • We offer children choice so that they have some control and power over their lives.

  • We create an environment which is a safe space to share ideas, consider alternative courses of action , make mistakes and try again.

  • Encourage children to make decisions together.

  • Support children to understand that they are part of a family, class, group, school and community.

  • Encourage children to value each other's views and talk about their feelings and their likes and dislikes.

  • Encourage children to listen to each other and to value everyone's contributions.

Rule of Law

What is the Rule of Law?

The need for rules to make a happy, safe and secure environment to live and work.

How we promote this:

  • We consistently reinforce our high expectations of the children.

  • We follow our Golden Rules and understand why we have these.

  • Discuss why rules are needed and how they should be administered fairly so that everyone is kept happy and safe.

  • Encourage and support children with learning about right from wrong.

  • Help children to understand their own and others' behaviour and feelings as well as the consequences of their actions.

  • Help children understand how to keep themselves save and how to resolve conflicts appropriately.

  • Create an environment in which actions are always followed through and requests responded to.

  • Children learn about the jobs of those involved with the rule of law.

Individual Liberty

What is Individual Liberty?

Protection of your rights ad the rights of others around you.

How we promote this:

  • The children are given boundaries which encourage them to make choices safely.

  • We develop children's self-esteem and confidence in their own abilities.

  • Opportunities to develop a positive sense of themselves and to celebrate thier personal achievements.

  • We give children opportunities to ask questions. Ensuring they know that their questions, ideas and opinions will be valued and respected.

  • Children will be given lots of opportunities to learn and explore their thoughts and feelings with those that they trust, and staff will model vocabulary to help them to do this.

  • Children will be given lots of opportunities to learn and develop their independence.

  • Children will be given opportunities to engage in a wide range of activities that are not limited by gender or stereotypes.

  • Children will be given lots of opportunities to learn to express their own views and respect the fact that others may have different views.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

What is Mutual Respect?

Understanding that we all don't share the same beliefs and values. Respecting those values, ideas and beliefs of others whilst not imposing our own onto them.

How we promote this:

  • Children will be given lots of opportunities to reflect on their similarities and differences with each other and foster an inclusive approach.

  • The children will have lots of opportunities to make links with the local community, for example, outings to local places (such as shops or places of worship), inviting members of the local community to visit the school, taking part in local events and making links with local charities.

  • We will explore the wider community and the whole world.

  • Children will explore and learn about other faiths, cultures, traditions, families, communities and ways of life. They will be encouraged to share their own experiences and respond to the experiences of others.

  • Children will be encouraged to appreciate similarities as well as differences, helping them to build constructive and respectful relationships.
